This Blog is in regards to the current elections in Telengana and 4 other states. We, in Hyderabad, have the campaigning going on with full throttle. Candidates of different parties, going to all the places to explain their plan of development, agenda etc.
However, having experience of past few elections, some questions ran across my mind.
Do we understand the importance of this day?
Do we take this as an opportunity to build our fortune ?
Do we have the eligibility (voter id card) to Vote ?
Have we done sincere efforts to get the voter id (in case we do not have) ?
Are we, as citizen ready to celebrate voting day as a festival ?
Are we going to enjoy the holiday given for voting as an extended weekend ?
We, the educated people are good at criticizing the government at every instance of (assumed to be) failure. Be it assembly or lok sabha, we have not left an opportunity in criticizing the government, but have we ever thought of voting ?
The above questions says it all. We do not take Voting day as seriously as a Democratic country should do. We are happy to take a day off going out and enjoying with friends and family. If the day happens to be near weekend, we enjoy the extended weekend. Not giving even a thought about our nation and its future or rather our children's future. There are instances in past, where only 5 votes were given in whole constituency and the candidate won the election because it was only his family who voted. Surprised !!!!
Rajasthan Congress Chief C. P. Joshi was defeated by a single Vote in 2008 assembly election.
One more example, in Karnataka elections last August, it is said that majority of the crowd from Bangalore city had moved out to enjoy the extended weekend and the results was not to the expectation of all. Those who enjoyed the extended weekend, were seen criticizing the election commission, the candidates, the society. Did they even think that it was they themselves responsible for this debacle ?
I sincerely hope, people of Hyderabad will not do the mistake Bangalorians have done and come out in good numbers to change the future of our country (local elections also impact national alliances).
The least we can do is to celebrate election day as a Festival and make it compulsory to vote. Get into details of the candidate and his work history. Look into the agenda of party and its plan to take forward the state/country.
